Hi Harry, tell us, what attracted you to being an apprentice at The Grove?
I originally gained an interest in the Horticulture or Landscape Operative Level 2 apprenticeship as I wanted to gain practical gardening skills whilst learning on the side.
What sort of support and guidance have you received at The Grove?
During my time at The Grove I have had access to a wide range of skill development opportunities and hands-on experience that couldn’t be gained from a course alone. This includes tasks such as mixing 2 stroke fuel and using machinery such as strimmers and backpack blowers. On the apprenticeship I have also received informative training on plants which has helped with plant identification and has honed my pruning techniques.
What is your favourite thing about The Grove?
My favourite thing about working at The Grove is the wide range of day-to-day tasks to get involved in. It allows you to gain experience in a variety of different areas which is important for development.
What have you learnt since being an apprentice at The Grove?
Since becoming an apprentice I have gained lots of new gardening skills and have also achieved my tractor licence!
What does a typical day look like for you at work?
The day begins with morning duties covering the main outdoor areas of the hotel, making sure that the grounds and gardens are looking immaculate and up to standard.
Where do you see yourself in your career in five years’ time?
In a few years’ time I hope to have fully fleshed out my learning to be knowledgeable in most areas of gardening, and finally becoming a fully qualified gardener.
