Starting a career in greenkeeping

Adam Lowe, Apprentice Greenkeeper at The Grove, first joined the team through the summer casual recruitment programme before going on to start an apprenticeship. “Starting as a summer casual meant I was able to begin learning on the job and gave me a great introduction to the industry. It also made the transition into my apprenticeship really smooth, as I’d already built good relationships within the department.”

Now more than a year into the apprenticeship, Adam has been able to build practical skills while receiving support both on the course and through his college programme. “I’ve had good support from my college tutor as well as my colleagues, who are always happy to offer assistance whenever I need it.”

How weather and seasons shape greenkeeping

The weather and changing seasons also play a big part in determining what each day looks like – something that might not be immediately obvious to those enjoying the finished course. “Something people might not realise is just how dependent our days are on the weather and the seasons, and how much the job can change from course to course. Having to deal with England’s beautiful rain always keeps things interesting!”
